Early Childhood Screening & Assessments

2025-2026 Early Childhood Screening

Early Childhood Screening

Preschool screenings are held throughout the year on predetermined dates. This helps identify students who may be in need of a comprehensive assessment to determine the presence of a suspected disability. Screenings take approximately 30 minutes and are completed by a multidisciplinary team which may include a Speech Language Therapist, Speech Language Therapist Assistant, School Psychologist, or Special Education Teacher.

Screenings are done via appointment only at the Warrick County Central Services building located at 930 West Main Street, Boonville, IN.  If you would like to schedule an appointment to have your child screened, please call the Special Education Office @ 812-897-6578.

Please bring a copy of your Child’s Birth Certificate to the screening appointment.

If your child is not yet age 3, please contact Indiana First Steps at 812-402-4482. First Steps is a statewide program in Indiana providing early intervention services and related therapies to infants and toddlers from birth up until their 3rd birthday.

Assessments

Comprehensive assessments are completed by our Early Childhood Assessment Team. Depending on the specific areas of suspected delays, this may include a School Psychologist, Speech Language Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, or Behavior Consultant. After completion of an evaluation and qualification as a student with a disability, students may receive services including, but not limited to: Special Educational Classroom support, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech/Language Therapy.

Speech and Language Pathologists offer a "speech only" evaluation for those families that are only concerned with their child's speech development. If a student qualifies with a Speech or Language Impairment only, they can receive walk-in speech therapy.

If you feel the Early Childhood program may be right for your student, please contact the Office of Special Education.

WHY IS THE SCREENING BEING CONDUCTED?

State and federal law requires local school districts to provide child find procedures for special education. The purpose of the screening is to help identify preschool children ages 3-5 (not attending kindergarten) who may be in need of early special education services. This may include services for students with delays in communication, motor skills, adaptive, social, or conceptual development. While Warrick County School Corporation tries to raise awareness about the procedure with all parents of preschool-aged children, it is NOT necessary for all children to attend. It is up to the parents to decide if their child may need this developmental screening due to concerns about potential developmental delays.

HOW WILL YOU PARTICIPATE?

The developmental screening is completed by a speech language pathologist/assistant and preschool school psychologist/diagnostician. The screening process takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.

HOW WILL PARENTS BE NOTIFIED OF THE RESULTS OF THE SCREENING?

Informational meetings will be provided for parents during and/or after a child participates in the screening. We will inform you of your child’s strengths and if necessary, areas that need to be improved. Suggestions will be given to work on specific areas of development. For children who do not pass the screening, the formal evaluation process through the Warrick County School Corporation will be explained. *Please note that the preschool screening is not a formal assessment for special education services.
